What is Art Therapy?

Art Therapy is a mental health profession, in which clients use art media, the creative process, and the resulting artwork to explore their feelings, reconcile emotional conflicts, foster self-awareness, and increase self-esteem. Art Therapy should be conducted by a trained Art Therapist.

Facts about Art Therapists:
  • Art Therapists are specially trained in both art and psychotherapy.
  • Art Therapist are trained to pair art directives with the individual needs of the clients to work towards treatment goals.
  • Art Therapists need to complete a graduate school program to obtain their master’s degree.  They also need to have Studio Arts classes at a bachelor’s Level, as well as Psychology classes at a bachelor’s level.
  • ATR-BC stands for Registered Board-Certified Art Therapist.  To become an ATR-BC you must complete a certain number of supervised hours from an ATR-BC, as well as pass the ATCBE (Art Therapy Credential Board Exam).

How can Art Therapy help?

Art Therapy can help people of all ages to gain new perspectives of their thoughts, feelings, and experiences.  Clients can also gain a deeper insight into their problems/issues.  Artmaking can be therapeutic and self-soothing.  Since Art Therapy is a sensory experience, it can be very helpful in recovering and healing from traumatic events.  The act of creating something can also allow the client to feel a sense of accomplishment and purpose, as well as improve self-esteem.  Art Therapy can also increase problem solving skills and frustration tolerance.
